Sting - Concert information

[Updated: August 12, 2001]

30-04-1997 / New York City, NY / Carnegie Hall (Rainforest benefit) / USA
During this year's annual Rainforest benefit Sting and Trudie were supported by Elton John, James Taylor, Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, Zucchero, Gary Shandling and Stevie Wonder. A lot of awareness was raised for the cause. Even the Empire State Building was turned green for the occasion.
A fifteen piece circus outfit, with jugglers, belly dancers, drummers and people walking around on their hands opened the show. The first half was a platform for the album, an eclectic collection from the Carnival Of The Animals with Bobby McFerrin and a string rendition of Abide With Me by Elton John accompanied by The Salvation Army Band. As the idea of the concert was that the performers played songs that took them back to their childhood, Sting contributed Water Of Tyne and was joined by fellow Geordies Jimmy Nail and Kathryn Tickell. Lyle Lovett performed Long Tall Texan with the others wearing "ten gallon" hats for the occasion.
The second half was more up tempo. Elton John cicked off with The Temptations' My Girl followed by My Guy. Sting sang Tears Of A Clown and Ain't Too Proud To Beg. He also joined Stevie Wonder on Living In The City. During the final song Trudie joined the rest of the artists during Stevie Wonder's As.
