The Police - Concert information

[Updated: August 12, 2001]

21-12-1980 / London / Tooting Bec Common / UK
Support act: Jools Holland, Tommy Cooper, Citizen Smith, Rico.
Attendance: 5,000.
The two London shows were played in a huge tent, which was situated on a regular circus site, off Tooting Bec Road, SW17. It was apparently the only venue in London during Christmas week in which The Police could play. Tickets for the three UK-shows went on sale at 10am on Sunday 14-12-1980.
After the shows The Police got a lot of negative reactions from the press, because the safety-measures seemed to be weak. Chris Salewicz wrote in N.M.E. (03-01-1981): "It was hell in there, so overpacked was it!"
Stewart: "We played in a tent and people got squashed. As it happened that gig was slammed by the press about how uncomfortablee it was and how we made our fans go through hell. As it turned out, it was just the journalists who had to go through hell because they didn't have their special box, which was soon destroyed. All the fans who wrote in LOVED it. At first we were smarting and thought we had blown it. But at the end of the day, the people who paid their good money enjoyed it" (Sounds; 24-10-1981).
The proceeds of the two shows were donated to a good cause.
Sting came on in a white flying suite with a teachers cape and hat.
During So Lonely The Police were joined by Rico and his band, Citizen Smith, Tommy Cooper (who died in 1984) and his introducer. Citizen Smith's friend was holding Sting's son Joe in his arms.
